Bambino Relievers Silence Big Train Lumber

April 18th, 2001; Turner Field: Another wacky and entertaining LP2 All-Star game has come to a close. The 3rd double annual mid-season classic saw a total of 8 runs scored in the first inning and only 3 more scored over the next 9, including the game winner in the bottom of the 10th inning. The Big Train hitters started the scoring by pounding Bambino starter Mike Hampton for 5 runs in the first inning. Hampton started the game off by plunking Derek Jeter, who was filling in for the injured Rafael Furcal. To make matters worse, Hampton then walked Joe DiMaggio, to set up a lefty Vs lefty match-up Vs Ted Williams. After a Pudge/Hampton meeting of the minds, Hampton proceeded to hang a breaking ball which was deposited about 450 ft away from its initial delivery point. "Hey, I'm 12-3 in the regular season," said a disgusted Hampton, "this is just for fun." It must have been a lot of fun for Hampton, who left after just 1 2/3 innings, after surrendering 3 hits, 4 BB's and 5 earned runs. "He got greedy," said Williams of Hampton, "..and I made him pay. He thought he could sneak that sorry bender past me. Come on man, I'm Teddy freakin' Ballgame!" After the 5 run outburst, the Big Train spirits were high, but little did they know that they would not tally another run for the rest of the night. In the bottom half of the first, the Bambino bats cut into the Big Train lead by putting up 3 runs of their own, thanks to a 2 run triple by Stan Musial and an RBI single by Will Clark. "They hab a dern good team," said 3 time Big Train starter Pedro Martinez, "I can't beleeb some of those balls found their way for hits (referring to a number of bloopers), but that's baseball for you." After the Bambinos nodded the score at 5-5, by scoring single runs in both the 3rd and the 5th innings, courtesy of RBI's by Will Clark and Mickey Mantle respectively, the game belonged to the relievers. Scott Strickland, Tom Seaver, Woody Williams, Cy Young, Bob Howry, Randy Wolf, Bob Wickman, and Mordecai Brown shut down the Big Train bats from the first inning on, allowing just 4 hits and 1 BB over 8 2/3 innings. "It was an amazing performance," said 3 Finger, who earned the victory, "just amazing." The Big Train pitching staff was almost as good, while Walter Johnson, Greg Maddux, Kevin Brown, Steve Carlton, Gabe White, Rich Garces and Mariano Rivera quieted the Bambino sticks until the bottom of the 10th, when Arod hit a 2-out single and Rogers Hornsby doubled in the game winner off Rivera. "I don't like to sound egotistical," said Hornsby following the game winning hit, "But every time I step up to the plate with a bat in my hands, I can't help but feel sorry for the pitcher." Will Clark took home the MVP honors after going 3-4 with 2 RBI's and one base on balls.
