US All-Stars Score Big; Win First All Star Game in New Format
A new All Star game format pitted the players from US owner-teams versus players from International owned-teams. The result was a high scoring affair in Fenway Park, with the US team pervailling 13-11. The Internationals got things started right away, jumping on starting pitcher Juan Marichal for 4 runs. Ty Cobb led off the game with a single and Rogers Hornsby promptly plated him with a two-run shot. The US Stars batted right back with 3 of their own in the bottom of the inning on a Johnny Bench homerun. They knotted the game at 5 in the bottom of the 2nd on a Eddie Mathews' 2-run shot.
Babe Ruth, who was named MVP by going 2-3 with 4 RBI, helped break the game open in the 4th as he launched a three-run shot to give the US a 9-5 lead, which they extended in the 5th three consecutive RBI hits from Nap Lajoie, Derek Jeter and Ruth.
Guillermo Mota picked up the win in relief, while Tim Redding was tagged with the loss. Keith Foulke, who surrendered a pinch-hit homerun in the ninth to Stan Musial, was able to close the game for the save.
"This was a great game between two great teams. I like the new format, and look forward to participating in more of these All Star games." commented Marcus Giles after the game.
