7-Run Sixth Inning caps US Victory
Just when it seemed that the Internationals were on their way to an All Star game victory, the US Stars pounced on unsuspecting Greg Maddux for a seven run outburst to take the 2004 "A" All Star game 7-5.
The Internationals jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Vlad Guerrero's RBI single in the third, and upped the lead to 4-0 in the fourth on a Ty Cobb 2-run single. At that point their pitching was cruising, having allowed just a first inning double to Tris Speaker. But Maddux got in trouble, allowing a Nap Lajoie single and Babe Ruth homerun to close the gap to 4-2. Three consecutive singles to Jose Vidro, Michael Barrett and Aramis Ramirez loaded the bases, and when he forced in a run with a walk of Carlos Guillen, that ended his outing as Shingo Takatsu was called into the game. Takatsu got Brian Giles to fly to left but then allowed a two-run double to George Sisler and a two-run single to Jim Edmonds before he gave way to Kiko Calero.
"You always want to perform well, especially in a game like this," Takatsu said through an interpreter, "but unfortunetly my pitches were getting a little too much of the plate and the hitters did a good job of putting them where there weren't any fielders."
Troy Percival picked up the win, while Keith Foulke closed out the ninth for the save. Sisler was named game MVP after going 1-3 with the game- winning RBI.
