2006 All-Star Game
Yankee Stadium, Finger Lakes - The 2006 All Star Game turned into Homerun Derby, as the teams combined for 8 longballs, including 2 from San Benito Strangegloves Hall of Famer, and All-Star Game MVP Carl Yastrzemski. The World Team got off to a fast start, as Ybor City Rollers catcher Joe Mauer and centerfielder Stan Musial went back-to-back in the first inning of Finger Lakes Flashes starter Mike Mussina. Ybor City Rollers firstbasemen Mark Teixeira's solo shot in the 2nd had the World Team up 3-0 and USA Team fans worried.
But the USA Team responded in the bottom of the 2nd, managing a run on Finger Lakes Flashes' Arky Vaughan's sacrifice fly that plated the New York Knights' big firstbasemen Ryan Howard.
San Benito Strangegloves starter Kelvim Escobar worked a quick top of the 3rd, and that's where the game got out of hand for the World Team.
Manager Morgan DeMarco called for starter Johan Santana of the Bristol Academicals to come on in relief of starting pitcher Chris Carpenter, and the USA Team kindly greeted Johan with a Nap Lajoie single and Yastrzemski homer to tie the game at 3. Santana looked to settle down, after he walked Carlos Beltran of the Florida Christians, he struck out Ryan Howard and Willie Mays but then the wheels fell off.
He surrendered a two-run homer to Aramis Ramirez, a double to Arky Vaughan, and after an intentional walk of Victor Martinez and an infield single to pinch hitter Ivan Rodriguez, Nap Lajoie laced a bases clearing double to the left field gap, putting the World Team down 8-3.
The USA Team added another run in the bottom of the 4th on Willie Mays' single of South Side Soldiers pitcher Roy Halladay, while the World Team struck once off of Justin Verlander of the Finger Lakes Flashes in the 5th.
After Chien-Ming Wang escaped a bases loaded jam in the top of the sixth by getting Ichiro Suzuki to ground out, Yastrzemski and Howard connected for homers off of Brandon Webb to make the score 11-4.
USA Team pitchers Cy Young and Taylor Tankersley matched World Team pitchers Bobby Jenks and Billy Wagner with scoreless innings in the 7th and 8th, before Bob Wickman came on in the ninth looking to close out the game.
He made it interesting as he surrendered a lead-off homer to Bristol's Albert Pujols, before setting down Charlie Gehringer, Ichiro Suzuki and Carlos Guillen to seal the USA Team's 11-5 victory.
The win improved the USA Team's record to 5-1 in the current USA vs. World format!
