The Duluth Superiors have the deck stacked against them. Perennial losers while occupants of Tottenham, the Superiors in 2008 broke ground on a new stadium in the cozy shipping town of Duluth, Minn. (above). While admitting it will be a struggle to build a contender, Duluth management believes it is up to the task of cleaning up the mess (and dearth of draft picks) that was left by the previous owner.
Duluth started building for the future by drafting Jacoby Ellsbury in the first round of the 2007 Free Agent draft. Duluth management lamented the fact that both Daisuke Matsuzaka and Carlos Pena went off the board, but Ellsbury is considered a viable consolation prize and a building block for the future.
Other solid picks in the draft include IF Mark Reynolds and OF Rick Ankiel. Clearly, Duluth is not concerned with OBP or with strikeouts. The jury is out on 'potential' players drafted such as Kyle Davies and John Buck.
The 2008 season was a learning experience for Duluth, which finished 20 games under .500 but scored the second-most runs in its division (hey, baby steps - stick with me here). Unfortunately, the pitching staff was 'led' by guys like Brad Penny, Tom Glavine, Curt Schilling and a host of other ragarms.
But the Superiors are anticipating the upcoming draft and have already started preparation, although all the preparation in the world might not make a dent in Bristol's dominance.
Ah, but who doesn't love a challenge?
