HOF Season 1 World Series Game 4
From Lp2 Wiki
In the second game of the double header, the Seattle Pilots survived hitting into 5 double plays to beat the Birmingham Black Barons 4-2 to even the series at 2 games a piece. "We hit into nine double plays tonight in this double header," remarked Ted Williams HOF, who had 2 hits in the win, "has that ever happened before?" The game wasn't without controversy, though, as Pilot starter Phil Niekro HOF was removed in the 5th inning for what was termed "repetitive throws to first base," by the manager Shoeless Joe Jackson. "He threw over the first 8 times in a row and the home crowd was getting on to him a little bit," said Jackson, "after the 7th throw, I went out and talked to him. He seemed a little aggravated and his arm was a bit sore, but I didn't ask him to come out. When he threw over the 8th time in a row, it was time to make a change." Niekro was throwing well before the repetitive pick-off chances began, having allowed just 1 run in 4 plus innings of work. "I don't have anything to say," said Niekro following the game, "coach took me out, big deal, it happens all the time."Early Wynn HOF notched the win, Mickey Welch HOF got the save and Rube Waddell HOF took the loss. Frank Baker HOF and Nap Lajoie HOF continued their hot hitting in the loss, each going 2-4. Frank Chance HOF and Tony Lazzeri HOF also had two hits for the Pilots.
In attendance for the game, Joe Chapman, Joe Terry and Donny Byer. Each manager was in control of their own substitutions.
LATE EDITION POST SCRIPT: The last out of the nip and tuck affair came with a runner on third for the Barons and Ozzie Smith HOF at the plate. The Wizard dinked a slow roller toward third and George Kell HOF charged, making a nice pick up, managing to get a litle zip on his throw to first. His throw; however, was up the line striking Smith in the back thus scoring the run. That is until the plate and first base umpires conferred and subsequently ruled Smith was out because he was running inside the box as he was straining to beat the throw.
The results were predictable...the Leafs were furious..the Pilots celebrated as they quickly headed to the clubhouse. A slo-mo replay and freeze frame provided by the tape ops in the television production truck indicated clearly that Smith was indeed well inside the lane.
