Blanton Wins 2008 (2007) Stats Cy Young Award

Joe Blanton of the Finger Lakes Flashes has won the 2008 (2007 stats) Cy Young award. Blanton, who helped lead the Flashes to 100 wins and a World Series appearance this season, led the Lp2 with a 3.10 ERA and posted a 16-7 record. “This is such an honor,” said Blanton at a news conference, “it’s sort of bitter sweet, now that I am with the Buckeyes. But we had a great run and I’ve got this award and those memories that I will cherish forever.”

Blanton, although not a unanimous choice, definitely was deserving of the highest honor. Along with leading the league in ERA, Joe also led the league in quality starts (25), quality start percentage (.781), innings (226), pickoffs (5) and was tied for the league lead in shutouts (3) and complete games (4).

Cole Hamels of the Accies finished second in the voting and Jake Peavy of the Rollers finished third. Johan Santana (Accies), Josh Beckett (Rollers) and Kelvim Escobar (Lumberjacks) each received a vote.
