Kings Win Lp2 2000 A Title
Tallahassee FL (AP) - Today, there is a new king of the Lp2 hill, the Los Angeles Kings. This after a 2-0 game 5 victory, where former MoJo JoJo's Jeff Kent broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the 8th with a 2 run bomb off Mo Jo reliever Scott Williamson; leading the Kings to their first ever Lp2 championship. Just like the Ybor City Rollers in the divisional playoff, the Mo Jo team lasted just 5 games. Unlike in the divisional series, this time it was the LA pitching staff's time to shine. In the 5 game series, the King's staff posted a 3.80 era, which is even more remarkable when that total includes the Jo Jo's game four shelling of Christy Mathewson (7 runs in 7 innings). "It was a team effort," said Lp2 World Series MVP Greg Maddux, "it's hard to believe that we held the powerful Mo Jo offense in check." Maddux, who gave up just 2 runs in a CG victory in the opener, out-did himself again, by throwing a complete game shutout in the series clincher. For the series, Maddux, in two starts, pitched 18 innings of 10 hit ball, allowing just two runs, striking out 14, while collecting two complete game victories. "The whole city feels great," said King's GM Jorge Lopez, "I feel great. The players feel terrific. Next season we want to win back to back championships!" After the game, Jo Jo center-fielder Brian Giles summed it up: "We just didn't hit or pitch and let me tell you, you can't win if you don't hit or pitch." Said Jeff Kent of his game winning blast, "I knew Scott was going to challange me. I just saw the rotation and swung. Luckily I got good wood and boy did it feel good!" Congratulations to Jorge and the Los Angeles Kings!

Los Angeles, CA (AP) - The Kings head home tonight having taken 2 games from the two-time defending champions at Turner field. "Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would lose two games in a row," said Jo Jo 1B Will Clark, "especially at home. I cannot believe we are down 2 games to none." The Jo Jo's are searching for answers having lost 5 of their last 6 playoff games. "Hey, that's a crazy stat," said Jo Jo GM JC, "how many teams can actually say they have lost 5 of their last 6 playoff games and still be fighting for the championship?" The Jo Jo's, who had a commanding 3 games to none lead over the South Side Soldiers, lost 3 straight to the Soldiers before winning game 7 and now find themselves down 2 games to none to the Kings." The red hot Kings are continuing to showcase their offensive prowess, having hit .340 in the divisional playoff, now hitting over .300 for the championship series. "Hopefully, I can stop the bleeding," said game 3 starter Mordecai Brown, "if not, we might as well pack our bags." Game 3, tonight, features a pair of HOF 17 game winners in Mordecai Bown (17-8) vs Christy Mathewson (17-14). "We put 8 fingers in the 3 hole, in case this thing goes 7," said JC, "you have to have your HOF'er out there if the series is on the line. I guess the Kings feel the same way."
