Section 1: A Brief Overview of the Lp2 Baseball League

The Ultimate Let's Play 2 Baseball League, now affectionately know as the "Lp2," was founded on May 15, 2000. The league was a brainstorm of co-Founder, Joe Chapman. JC, sick of being in numerous leagues where apathy seems to reign supreme, wanted something different, he wanted a change. While talking to a fellow DMB friend, co-founder Matt Bracken, it all came together. After a few hours of hammering out ideas, it was done. "This league will be a constant work in progress, we are always open to suggestion and change," stated JC, "it may sound trite, but we think this could easily become the best league on the net, a league where apathy does not have a place." Said co-founder Matt B., "This ain't no watered down league, this is the way baseball was meant to be played. This league is the ultimate competition for baseball. We have the best players young and old, competing with and against each other."
We will keep an up-to-date waiting list. In this day and age with the daily hassles of jobs, school, families etc, sometimes baseball has to take a backseat. We understand this. That being said, we will have a waiting list, for the simple fact that, if an owner has to sell his or her team, we want a new owner within a day or two. If you are looking for an active league, this may be for you. If you are looking for a league that will be around as long as there is a simulation program to run it, this may be for you. If you are looking for a league, where apathy has NO place, this may be for you. If you are looking for a league, where the commissioner plays by the rules, updates almost daily (year round), and truly cares about the longevity, standards and quality of the league, this may be for you. Personally, our goal is to have the best simulation league on the net. We know that everyone claims that to be their goal, but, around here, we take that goal seriously. We may have just started, but like they say, “this is only the beginning!” If this interests you, keep reading.

Section 2: HOF'ers of the Lp2

One unique aspect of our league is that every team will have 1 Major League Baseball Hall of Fame player on it. The HOF'er can be either a hitter or a pitcher, but must have played at least half of their major league seasons after 1900. Players chosen in the initial HOF player draft were: Babe Ruth, Walter Johnson, Nolan Ryan, Ted Williams, Ed Walsh, Sandy Koufax, Cy Young, and Lou Gehrig. Below are the current rules for the Lp2 HOF'ers. These rules have been tweaked a few times during the course of the league in an effort to find the perfect fit. The "new" rule went into effect in 2003, in which all new HOF'ers are eligible to play just 8 Lp2 seasons before retiring.

  • HOF'ers drafted in the original draft are eligible to play for 12 Lp2 seasons.
  • HOF'ers brought into the league after the original draft, but before the "new" rule inception, are eligible to play 10 Lp2 seasons.
  • HOF'ers brought into the league after the "new" rule inception are eligible to play 8 Lp2 seasons.
  • HOF'ers can be dropped after playing 3 straight Lp2 seasons.
  • HOF'ers can be traded for other HOF'ers, but each team must maintain one and only one HOF'er at all times.
  • HOF'ers that are dropped, who still hold eligibility, can be drafted in future drafts and used until their eligibility is up.
  • HOF'ers must have at least 3 years of eligibilty left to be drafted again. If not, they are automatically retired.
  • HOF'ers retire after they have used up all of their eligibility. Once retired, they cannot be drafted again.

There will be a deadline day, each year, where teams will have to announce any HOF drops (eligibility rule is above). Then, prior to the draft, any teams that dropped a HOF'er will participate in a one round HOF draft.

Section 3: Drafts of the Lp2

This section is being transformed beginning with changes in the 2007 draft, which lead to the main changes of the 2008 draft.
•     Draft Weekend!:
For those with the ability to travel, JC will host a “draft day/draft weekend” at his house. This is to increase the participation and camaraderie in the league. Friday night we can sit around and talk about the league, play some video games, play some poker, etc. Saturday we’ll have the draft and spend the rest of the time doing the same thing we did on Friday night, maybe even catching a college basketball or baseball game in the process. For those that cannot travel, the live draft will also be held via internet chat room. Instant messaging service and phone are also used as backup/emergency modes of communication. In the event that an owner cannot make the live draft, they can submit any type of list (positional, statistical (ie: Round 1: best OF OPS) or player based). Or, you can have someone draft for you. Every attempt will be made to hold the draft on the same weekend each year, making it much easier to clear your schedule or make accommodations to either travel to the draft, or be free to be on the internet or phone.
•     Draft Day:
Beginning with the 2008 draft, the keepers have been decreased from 30 (+1) to 20 (+1). This is the major change that has been implemented.
The 2008 Draft, as well as all future drafts, will have 10 rounds and 10 rounds only. All rookies, unprotected players and the previous year's un-drafted players will all be available in the same draft.
Again, following the changes from the 2007 draft, beginning in 2008, each team will be allowed to lose a maximum of 10 unprotected players in the 10 round draft. Once the team has its 10th player selected, it can lose no more and the remaining players are added back to the team's roster. Note: Teams may draft their own players from their own unprotected list during the draft. For example: Let's say that, by round 7 of the 10 round FA draft, the Florida Christians have had 10 guys drafted by other teams from their "unprotected lists." From rounds 8-10, no more unprotected players from the Florida Christians may be taken. In addition, the unprotected players left from the Christians roster will go back to the Florida Christians and remain part of next year's roster. So, if the Christians had 20 unprotected players at the start of the draft and 10 were drafted to other teams, the Christians will receive back the remaining 10 unprotected players.

Once you state that you "pass" on a draft selection, all remaining picks are officially forfeited, no matter when your "pass" statement was entered.
There are no "rookie rules" in place. If a player appeared in 1 game and is on the league disk, he is available for drafting, regardless of his "qualifications”.</P>

Note: Teams may draft their own players from their own unprotected list during the draft. Teams may go over 40 players in the draft, but upon the conclusion of the draft, teams will have 24 hours to either waive or trade the extra players. If a team is under 40 players at the conclusion of the draft, a waiver process will begin for REMOVE remaining free agents and or REMOVE those placed on waivers by other teams. Important: Teams cannot drop players at any time in the Lp2 just to draft more players and/or create more "open" roster spots. Players can only be waived (never dropped) in the Lp2 when a team is over the 40 player max.

•     Supplemental FA draft picks: These picks are awarded to the teams BY the Lp2 Executive Board! These picks are EARNED during the season via league activity. Some teams may be awarded up to 3 picks, while others receive 0 picks. Picks are not awarded to teams just because they turn in their lineups! Picks are awarded to teams that go above and beyond to make the league the best it can be. "Supplemental Picks" can be awarded for ANY round, but no earlier than the 5th round of the FA draft.

  • Players that did not play the previous year may be a keeper (part of the 20+1), but teams will lose the rights to said player if not part of the 20+1. The player then is removed from the league until he appears on another DMB disk.

Section 4: Basic Rules of the Lp2

•     Games are run on the commissioner's computer, results posted, hopefully daily.
•     Injuries are set to "Injury Rating."
•     NO DH (starting 2003 "A")
•     Max player usage is105% vs L, 105% vs R, 105% overall. Players are farmed for the rest of the regular season when these limits are reached.
•     Usage for HOF'ers: 105% usage overall. No % rules vs L or R for HOF'ers.
•     No salaries or contracts.
•     GM's cannot knowingly place a player in a position he is not rated for. (IE a GM cannot have a catcher playing 3rd or a 3rd baseman playing catcher; unless DMB rates them at that position. The only exceptions are: OF'ers can play any OF position and a starting pitcher can be in a relief role, even if not rated so. But, an RP cannot start if not rated as such.
•     40 man roster, 25 man active roster and 15 man minor league roster. If you make a trade that puts you over 40, you must place as many players as needed on WAIVERS, to get your roster back to 40.
•     Teams cannot have more than 40 players or less than 35 at any given time.

•     Waivers: A waiver priority list will be created prior to each season and updated when claims are made. Players placed on waivers may be claimed by other teams based on the waiver priority list, with the highest priority officially claiming the player. In order to place a player on waivers, the player must be posted on the message board in the "transactions" section. In order to place a claim on a player on waivers, you most post a claim to that thread. Once 7 days have passed, the team with the highest priority who claims a player is awarded the player and the claiming team is placed at the end of the waiver priority list. A player not claimed by any team within 7 days, will be released into the free agent pool. The waiver priority list is created/reset based on reverse order of finish of the latest season. However, in the wave of releases following the draft, players will remain on waivers for just 3 days and then they are released back into the free agent pool. Therefore, all waiver claims must be entered by the Tuesday following the draft at 7PM EST. You may have multiple claim requests, but claims will be processed based on time-stamp of request and the order will be corrected after each process is made. Due to the fact that all teams are required to be at 40 players following the draft, barring trades, a player will need to be placed on waivers in order to claim one on waivers. After all of those waiver claims are processed, we go back to the regular process.

•     No Free Agent pickups of any kind are allowed. A Free Agent is considered a player who was not drafted into the LP2 at all in that particular season, or any player clearing waivers. It is the GM’s obligation to ensure he has enough Plate Appearances and Batters Faced to cover the entire season.
•     Trades are allowed. Trade deadline, each season, will be before the games of July 31 of the season are run. Trading resumes with the conclusion of the World Series.

•     Draft picks may only be traded for one draft ahead. For instance, during the season played in 2008, picks may only be traded for the draft to be held in 2009. During the 2009 draft, picks for 2010 may start being traded.

•     Managers are encouraged to be active participants in the league. This includes but is not limited to, writing articles on your team or league happenings, trash talking, sending in changes, posting short news briefs on your team's message board, etc. If you are not interested in participating in a year-round league, please do not apply! We would like a small core of very active and enthusiastic owners, who love the game and love to write/talk about it; owners that are in it for the long haul! As long as there is a simulation game on the market, we will have this league in full force!
•     GM’s can make changes anytime, there is not a weekly deadline for changes. The commissioner will make any changes as they come in.

•     At September 1 on the season calendar, rosters may expand to 35 men for the duration of the regular season.

•     In the case that a one game playoff is required to break a tie, regular season rules are in effect. Any player farmed due to usage violations is ineligible to play.

Section 5: Lp2 Playoffs

The playoffs! The races! The Trash talking! Who is going to make it? You? Them? In its current setup, only 4 teams get to participate in the Lp2 post-season - the 3 division winners, plus the next team with the best record. Do you have the will, the determination, and the managerial "know how" to win the highly regarded "Champion's Trophy?" This is an award handed out to each Lp2 Champion!
•     Playoffs are 2-3-2 format
•     1 game off between the end of the season and the 1st playoff series.
•     1 game off after games 2 and 5. 1 game off between each series.
•     Team with the best record has home field advantage in the World Series.
•     Teams must have at least a 4 man rotation.
•     Injuries continue to be "on" during the playoffs.
•     Injuries during the regular season may continue over into the postseason.
[edit]

Section 6: Ballparks of the Lp2

•     Any stadium/year since 1900 can be used. Park factors from the year and stadium chosen will be used.
•     Parks can be changed when a new owner comes in or a team has remained in a ballpark for 3 Lp2 seasons.
•     If an owner is using a park, no other owner may use that park, no matter the year.

Section 7: Lp2 Minor Leagues (PCL)

  • As of 2007, the Minor Leagues have been discontinued. If the league decides to incorporate it again at sometime, it will be discussed.

Section 8: Lp2 Awards

•     Physical Awards are mailed to or handed out at the draft to the Lp2 Champion and the Owner of the Year (voted on by peers).
•     Regular Season MVP (In 2000 "B" it became only for modern players).
•     Regular Season Cy Young (In 2000 "B" it became only for modern players).
•     HOF Player of the Year
•     Gold Glove Awards (chosen by the League Office)
•     Owner of the Year
•     Rookie of the Year, only given to 1st year players on the DMB disk.

•     Reliever of the Year

Section 9: Disputes and Concerns

• Should any owner have a concern or dispute regarding any rule, he should post on the message board. The owner’s comments will be reviewed by the Executive Board and responded to in due course.

•     The rules will be reviewed at least annually by the executive board to ensure clarity.
