- Niphilim Playing BIG (11/19/06)
The Newhall Niphilim continued their winning ways, stretching their streak to 5 straight wins on the young season. This time they got a great pitching performance from Jason Bergmann, as well as timely hitting from Jason Bergmann! Bergmann went 7 innings allowing one run on one hit, and added 4 RBI, including a 3-run homer!
Elsewhere, South Dade Rattlers and Cardiff Dragons wait 'til the late innings to settle things; Josh Johnson pitching well; Macon Enemies and St. Lambert Lock playing a tight ball game; Jason Schmidt pitches 7 strong looking for his first win of the year; Runelvys Hernandez adds his own 3-run homer as well!
So far in the young season 9 teams are at .500 or better!
- Newly Acquired Reyes Among Days Best (11/19/06)
Anthony Reyes is fitting in just fine with his new teammates. After being acquired from the Staten Island Squires, Reyes fired 7 one hit innings for the Providence Bandits. Jerome Williams tossed his second straight complete game, this one a 6-hit shut out over the Macon Enemies. Casey Blake provided some late game heroics for the Toronto Maple Leafs as they were forced to come from behind against the Camden Crusaders. Other notables included a Kyle Davies, Wade Miller duel; Corey Lidle with a start to remember and Francisco Liriano getting back on track.
- Late Games Dominated by Surprising Pitchers (11/18/06)
This has the makings of a crazy year, as almost anything can happen. That was very much evident tonight as teams got strong starting pitching from the likes of Jesse Foppert, Zack Greinke, Sean Henn, Tim Stauffer, Byung-Hyun Kim and Jason Johnson.
Tony Clark hit his first two homers of the year and drove in 4, while Ben Broussard and Trot Nixon also drove in 4; Broussard's on a one-out grand slam.
Five pitchers have reached 2-0 already, they include Kim, Aaron Cook, Chris Young, Brad Halsey and Claudio Vargas. Young is the early leader in strikeouts with 15.
- San Benito plays Host to Wild One (11/18/16)
The San Benito Littlegloves again played a wild, back and forth game, which featured 24 runs, 33 hits and couldn't be decided in just 9 innings. Who won? Jose Guillen smacked two homeruns and drove in 5 to help a bullpen that surrendered an 8-1 lead, but could the Macon Enemies spoil the party? Check the results to find out!
Elsewhere, Clay Hensley and Jason Grilli dueled in Camden, Vincente Padilla and Orlando Hernandez did battle in Macon, while Ben Hendrickson and Ezequiel Astacio looked to pitch the Sioux City Angels into first place, while Francisco Liriano wasn't as pleased in his season debut as JD Closser went deep twice.
The offensive headliners included Jason Varitek, Ryan Shealy, and J.J. Hardy each knocking in 4 runs, while John Rodriguez out-did them all, driving in 6!
- Opening Night Arrives! (11/17/06)
Fourteen teams started the night all with one goal- capture the PCL Championship! As always, pitching wins championships, and teams showed during Opening Night that they understand that as there were many impressive pitching performances. Brandon Claussen, Chris Young, Javier Vazquez, Tomo Ohka, Daniel Cabrera, David Bush, Kevin Brown, Jerome Williams and Byung-Hyun Kim all pitched outstanding for their teams!
Offense played its part as well on Opening Night, as Barry Bonds decided to show the home fans some late-game heroics.
But the game of the night was a match up of expansion teams, as the South Dade Rattlers hosted the San Benito Littlegloves in a game that lasted well into the night, and finally finished in 16 innings!
Player of the Day
11/19/06
- SP Anthony Reyes showed why the Providence Bandits dealt for him, as he surrendered just one hit in 7 shut out innings in his franchise debut. He walked on and struck out five, pitching the Bandits past the Albany Armadillos 7-1.
- SP Jason Bergmann handled the pressure of keeping an early season win streak alive by tossing 7 innings of one hit, one run ball to give the Newhall Niphilim their 5th straight win. He added to his career day by going 2-for-3 at the dish, singling in a run in the second, and then drilling a pitch from Jesse Foppert for a 3-run homer!
11/18/06
- RF Jose Guillen of the San Benito Littlegloves had a very fine 9 innings against the Macon Enemies: 3-for-5, a homerun, 3 runs scored and 3 runs driven in. But when he launched a one-out, two-run blast to left field off Macon pitcher Zach Day he became just the second player this year with a multi-homer game and gave the Littlegloves a thrilling 13-11 walk-off victory!
- 1B Ben Broussard's first hit of the season was a big one. As his one-out grand slam broke open a close game that his Newhall Niphilim were able to hang onto in an 8-5 victory over the San Benito Littlegloves. Newhall improved to 3-3, while the Gloves dropped to 3-3.
11/17/06
- SP Daniel Cabrera of the Gainsville Gators tossed 8 shut-out innings, striking out 8 and allowing just 4 hits. But the biggest surprise was that he added two hits and the only RBI of the game in a 1-0 victory over the Staten Island Squires.
