Pedro Martinez #1 Pick Overall
by Matt Bracken May 24, 2000
When it came to the first overall I had no doubts who my first pick was going
to be, my main man Pedro Martinez. If I had to bet on one pitcher winning the first Cy Young award for this league.
Pedro is the most dominating pitcher in the game, he throws his fastball from 92-95 mph
and he also has the ability to rear back and hit 97-98 when he needs to and the he can go back to 92 mph to throw a hitter off.
But his bread & butter pitch has to be his unbelievable change-up.
Pedro came up through the Montreal Expos farm system and early in his career was called a head-hunter for his exploits throwing inside, most noteably up-and-in. Slowly, he started to develop his control and overall mound presense which makes him an intimidating force out there. Randy Johnson he is not, he is only 5'11" and 160 pounds but he has amazing balance and arm-whip for his size. His delivery is flawless and his endurance is unmatchable.
